Thailand's energy labeling system helps consumers identify energy-efficient appliances. For air conditioners, this 5-star rating system can significantly impact your electricity costs over time.
The Thai Energy Label System
Thailand's Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT) assigns energy labels from Level 1 (least efficient) to Level 5 (most efficient) based on the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER).
Label Levels Explained
Level 5 (Green - Most Efficient)
- EER: 11.0 and above
- Savings: 35%+ compared to Level 1
- Best for: Heavy daily use (8+ hours)
Level 4
- EER: 10.6 - 10.99
- Savings: 25-35% compared to Level 1
- Good for: Regular daily use
Level 3
- EER: 10.0 - 10.59
- Savings: 15-25% compared to Level 1
- OK for: Moderate use
Level 2
- EER: 9.0 - 9.99
- Savings: 5-15% compared to Level 1
- Consider only for occasional use
Level 1 (Red - Least Efficient)
- EER: Below 9.0
- Baseline efficiency
- Avoid if possible
Reading the Label
The Thai energy label shows:
- Energy efficiency level (1-5 stars)
- Cooling capacity (BTU/hr)
- Power consumption (watts)
- EER value
- Annual electricity cost estimate
Cost Impact Example
For a 12,000 BTU AC running 8 hours daily:
- Level 1 (EER 8.5): ~650 THB/month
- Level 3 (EER 10.0): ~550 THB/month
- Level 5 (EER 11.5): ~480 THB/month
Level 5 saves ~2,000 THB per year compared to Level 1.
